Covered in thick mucus membrane, the nasal conchae are responsible for regulating the airflow through the nasal passages.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Nasal conchae structure<\/h2>\n<p>The three pairs of conchae on either side of the nasal cavity project horizontally into the breathing space, dividing it into the inferior, middle and superior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therespiratorysystem.com\/nasal-meatus\/\">meatuses<\/a> and the sphenoethmoidal recess <sup>[2, 3]<\/sup>. Each pair, placed over and facing\u00a0toward the corresponding meatus <sup>[4, 7]<\/sup>, is identified by different names, depending on its location:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therespiratorysystem.com\/inferior-nasal-concha\/\">Inferior nasal concha<\/a>: <\/strong>The largest and lowest of the three turbinate bones <sup>[10]<\/sup>, the inferior concha or inferior turbinate is located on the septum, separating the two nasal cavities <sup>[11]<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therespiratorysystem.com\/middle-nasal-concha\/\">Middle nasal concha<\/a>: <\/strong>As the name suggests, the middle nasal concha is the bone located between the superior and inferior conchae <sup>[8]<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therespiratorysystem.com\/superior-nasal-concha\/\">Superior nasal concha<\/a>: <\/strong>It is the small, delicate seashell shaped bone located above the two other turbinates <sup>[5, 6]<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The superior and middle turbinates both originate from the cranial region of the skull, being considered structural parts of the cranial bones <sup>[9]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therespiratorysystem.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Nasal-Conchae.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therespiratorysystem.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Nasal-Conchae-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"Nasal Conchae\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.therespiratorysystem.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Nasal-Conchae-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.therespiratorysystem.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Nasal-Conchae.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-39\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nasal Conchae<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Functions of the nasal conchae<\/h2>\n<p>The nasal conchae or turbinates are named this way because they function in a similar way as a turbine, being principally responsible for regulating the air flow during inhalation. The bones expand the surface area of the nasal cavity, allowing the air to come into better contact with the cavity walls. They also slow down the laminar flow of air through the breathing passages, so the air spends a longer time in the cavity in order to be dehumidified <sup>[3]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Another function of the nasal conchae is channeling the air entering the respiratory system to go through the mucous membrane and cilia to be filtered and warmed up properly <sup>[12]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The inferior conchae are primarily responsible for the above functions while the middle conchae create a protective shield over the sinuses. Possible causes include cold, flu, allergies, nasal polyps and certain hormonal imbalances <sup>[14]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>There are various nasal decongestants, antihistamines and nasal steroids that can be used to treat the condition.
